This summer for our outdoor group lesson we played a quick game of rhythm hopscotch. I let students choose a note of their choice to draw in the boxes, with double squares having the same note value. It was fun and a bit challenging, but I thought it might also be a fun way to introduce rhythm patterns in their pieces in the future by having them place rhythm flashcards on a masking tape hopscotch board to match the values of the rhythm in a measure. When they can feel the rhythm in their whole body, its much easier for them to transfer the concept to their small motor muscles and play it correctly with their fingers!
