Theory
Some music includes very contrasting characters or moods. Listen to Rockabel's Canon to hear an example of how 2 very different moods are created with the same melody.
Improvisation
Choose an improvisation activity to complete below.
Activity 1: Nature Contrast Improv
Watch Create First Hot Sands/Cool Water or Shark Music sample improvisations that include contrasting sections. Choose 2 contrasting things in nature and improvise music that represents both. Light and Dark? Sunshine and Storm? Sunrise and Sunset? etc.
Activity 2: Music Variation Cards
Choose a piece you have already learned to play and choose at least 3 ways to change it to create a contrasting piece.
Listen to this sample of a quick variation I created using the theme from Hot Cross Buns. The Haunted House, Beetle Bug, Backwards and Scrambled Eggs variation cards that I use definitely change up the mood.
Activity 3: Brainstorm Character Piece Music
Watch this video to learn how to brainstorm ideas for writing character-based music. Then try improvising your own piece that includes 2 contrasting sections after brainstorming ideas that would represent each.
