Selecting Intermediate Piano Repertoire
Selecting the right level of intermediate piano music for students that they are excited to play can be challenging. Jane Magrath's Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature is a great resource, but I like having a list of repertoire that is more student-friendly for browsing.
Rastall Music Studio's valuable piano music database includes a search engine for piano literature organized by level, composer, book, time period, or publisher. This is a great resource for piano lesson planning and festival piece selection because it specifies a level for pieces found within common piano repertoire literature books.
The list of classic piano literature below includes video samples of music available in my music library from Rastall Level 5. For festival prep, I encourage students to browse the videos below and choose some of their favorites before we make the final selection of festival pieces at lessons.
It's definitely more motivating to practice music that you enjoy the sound of!
