Rhythm Challenge and Activities for Group Lessons

The online resources below include some options for this month's Rhythm Challenge and activities we'll try at group lessons.

Rhythm Practice Videos

At group lessons, students take turns choosing the movement for each of these rhythm practice videos.

Stomping your feet with a steady beat while you choose a hand motion helps you keep a steady pulse.

Do you want to
  • slide hands?
  • windshield wipers?
  • snap?
  •  tap thighs?
  •  chopstick finger tap?

Remember to count aloud using the smallest note pattern found in each example.
Eighths: 1 & 2 &, etc.
Sixteenths: 1 e & a, 2 e & a, etc.

Late Elementary

Musical Minds: Dotted Quarters and Single Eighth Notes

Intermediate

Musical Minds: Multi Level Eighths, Dotted Quarters and Sixteenths
Choose your level of difficulty. (Red=Easy, Green=Moderate, Blue=Advanced)
For a challenge tap one level with your left hand at the same time as you tap a different level with your right hand!

Rhythm Dictation Games

Using a beat board can help dictate rhythms more easily. Place a bean or small candy on each beat (or 2 if the rhythm contains eighth notes). Then tap track the heart beats as you listen to the rhythm and remove the candy on the hearts where you don't hear a sound strike.

This example shows
Slug Beetle Dead (Half Note, 2 Eighths, Quarter Rest)
Slug---- (Whole note)

Split Second Upbeat Challenge Game

How do you count the first measure or partial measure of each example?

  • Late Elementary Examples (up to 1:47)
  • Intermediate Examples (from 1:47-end)

Is this an upbeat?

Challenge 1: Identify if the first notes in each example are pickup notes or not. Do the beats in the first bar add up to the same # of beats indicated in the time signature? If so, than it is not an upbeat!

Challenge 2: Race to write the counts of the first measure or partial measure example on your paddle. The first person to answer correctly gets a bonus point and every correct answer earns a point.

Rhythm Cups

Learn the basic cup tap with this tutorial. Then practice tapping it along with varying speeds of 4/4 time music. For a challenge choose a song that includes rubato and try to match tempo like an accompanist would.
