What Happened at Prospective Student Piano Camp? Plus More Fun and Games


This week at piano camp the activities that students sampled were based on the 4 Arts of Music: Improvising, Reading, Arranging and Composing (see Forrest Kinney article)  This pedagogical framework in piano instruction enables students to become more expressive and creative at the piano as well as entrenching a solid understanding of the reasons behind the organization of the music they read on the page.

We started out with a simple improvisation duet on the black keys (key of F#) using the MusicClock app as a backtrack.

Music Theory Carnival Piano Games

For my most recent piano group lesson, we played carnival themed games with a music theory focus.  I brainstormed so many different ideas that it was hard to pick just a few to squeeze within an hour!

Take turns naming music signs attached to the lollipop of your choice.  If you name it correctly and the sucker has a colored dot on the bottom you get to keep it.

Summer K-6 Piano Camp Game Links

In addition to all of the hands on activities and games at piano camp, Piano Campers get to increase their skills using some fun online games and iPad laps during a portion of our music camp.  
If you want to extend the fun and learning from piano camp at home, check out some of these fun online activities that reinforce the concepts we are learning. Most of them work best on a pc.  If you want a challenge select the starred activities.
