Piano Composing Tutorial Videos: Melodies

By following a few simple steps you can combine notes to create effective memorable melodies for music in multiple styles.

Watch the videos below to learn simple tips about how to compose melodies and hear and see them in action.

Mr M How to Write a Melody

Start with chord notes.

When the beginning note of a phrase belongs with the left-hand chord it sounds more pleasing and less dissonant.

Use more steps, and repeats with fewer skips or leaps.

Memorable melodies often have a lot in common. Frequently jumping large distances across the keys does not usually create a melody that would be easy to sing or remember.

Repeat and Vary the Rhythms

Beethoven masterfully uses this tip in his 5th symphony with the "short-short-short-LONG" rhythmic idea woven throughout but with enough rhythmic variation in between not to bore the listener.

Finish Phrases with Long Notes

Try to sing the melody you create. Long notes at the end of phrases give you a chance to "breathe" so you don't get blue in the face!

Use 1, 2 or 4 Bar Phrases

Bars are measures in music. Pop and classic style music rarely has phrases that are 5, 7 or 9 measures long.

Use Sequence and other forms of Repetition
