Rhythm Ear Training Game Capture the Stars

 One of my piano students' favorite new games to play this year at piano lessons is Teach Piano Today's Don't Catch Cats!" When I first introduced it at group lessons, some creative piano students decided to choose crazy names for each of their pet cats or dogs which was accompanied by plenty of laughs and giggles. 

Since I teach students on a variety of levels, I wanted a game with simpler rhythms for new beginners and a challenging game for more experienced students.

Dangling Dog and Music Staff Landmarks

 I created this poster to display on my music bulletin board after learning a quick tip from a local workshop about how to help beginning students who experience confusion with Treble D and Bass B on the music staff. 

Because both are a space note next to the 5 lines of the music staff, young students sometimes fail to distinguish the difference. Can blue balls roll along the ceiling? Not likely!

Clap the rhythm of the phrase "You think you own whatever land you land on." from Pocahontas's Colors of the Wind Song. Then create melodies on black keys in any order using the same rhythm.

Choose a theme and your own words if you would like. For example:

• What's your dream vacation? "My dream vacation would be to Hawaii (or any other 3-syllable destination)"
• What did you eat for breakfast? "For breakfast, I had yogurt and some orange juice."
• What do you wish you could do after piano lessons? "I wish that I could go and eat some ice cream."

Can you create your own piece that imitates the melody rhythms in this piece but uses the notes in a different order?

1. Choose a key signature for your improvisation.

2. Experiment with right-hand melodies as you think of the words "Caterpillar Jump, Caterpillar Jump, Caterpillar Caterpillar Fly."

3. Consider adding a melodic sequence or repeating your theme in the relative minor key.

4. Add left-hand chord harmony to match your melody notes.

Piano Improvisation "Are You Sleeping" Leila Viss Noodle Challenge Day 2

 

I signed up for Leila Viss's noodle challenge because I have loved hearing about and implementing her creative ideas in the past after attending her workshops and reading her blog for years. I hope to expand my own confidence in improvising. I got a late start after being out of town, but had a lot of fun creating this quick video of a jazzy version of "Are You Sleeping" that I created in less than 2 minutes. It is a lot of fun to play with energy but my kids might name it "The Rude Awakening" if I start playing it in the early morning hours!
